{"id":5056,"date":"2021-11-27T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2024-03-20T16:35:34","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T20:35:34","slug":"jack-darling-dog-park-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/jack-darling-dog-park-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Darling Dog Park &#8211; A 22-Acre Fenced Paradise for Off-Leash Dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After visiting Etobicoke Creek Dog Park and now Jack Darling, I\u2019m starting to think that <strong>Mississauga might have some of the best dog parks in the entire Greater Toronto Area<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll never find dog parks as large as this in Toronto and many other Greater Toronto Area like the York Region simply open up a patch of green space, fence it in, and call it a dog park. But Mississauga must love their dogs differently!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Darling\u2019s dog park is by far <strong>the largest fenced off-leash space<\/strong> we have encountered to date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been putting off visiting this dog park because of its distance, I say &#8211; just do it (<em>unless your dog gets really car sick &#8211; then maybe don\u2019t do it!<\/em>)!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dog park is most definitely worth a visit and should be at the top of the list for any adventurous dog looking for MASSIVE off-leash play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for more dog-friendly related content? While that website lists specific hours and on-leash restrictions during the summer months, I&#8217;m doubtful! <a href=\"https:\/\/leashfreemississauga.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leash Free Mississauga<\/a> &#8211; the non-profit organization that helped set up and manage the dog parks in Mississauga does not specify dog park hours so my guess is sunrise and sundown! Once I get confirmation I&#8217;ll make an update to the post with the correct hours \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main address provides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Parking access to both the dedicated small dog area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parking access Leash-Free toboggan hill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parking access Main off-leash areas&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main off-leash area at Jack Darling dog park can also be accessed via <strong>3 other gated entryways<\/strong> including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Parking Lot D<\/strong> (North East Parking Lot) of Jack Darling Memorial Park<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unlabeled Parking Lot<\/strong> on the East side of the Memorial Park<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Southeast of the Tennis Courts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a map of all the entryways to every off-leash area. During the weekdays, this is more than plenty of space to accommodate everyone that comes to visit the dog park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d recommend parking at the parking lots within Jack Darling\u2019s Memorial park if you\u2019re planning on exploring more than just the off-leash area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For longer visits, I\u2019d recommend parking in <strong>Parking Lot A<\/strong> or <strong>Parking Lot 5<\/strong> instead which gives you easy access to the rest of the Memorial Park\u2019s features including the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Memorial beach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Splash pad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Playground<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waterfront trails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comfort stations (located at the<strong> small Lot C<\/strong> &#8211; which can park about 5 cars)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#faf8f9\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> During the popular \/ peak summer season, the parking lots will fill up and stay full for the day. Parking enforcement officers regularly patrol this part and <strong>are generous in giving out tickets to cars parked in an undesignated location<\/strong> (e.g. the side of the road, etc.). Thanks to its massive size and hard work to terraform the water treatment facility, you and your dog can enjoy plenty of variety during your off-leash visit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A surprisingly delightful aspect of this park is being able to walk on top of the water treatment facility off-leash. Dedicated dog fountain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the main off-leash area is a dedicated dog fountain. I\u2019m not sure if I have the most terrible of luck &#8211; but the fountain was not working during both my visits to the dog park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Google reviews have indicated that the dog fountain works, but to be safe I\u2019d recommend bringing your dog some water as well. This dog park does not have access to freshwater via streams, ravines, or lakes, so you\u2019ll definitely want to have water on you to keep yourself and your dog hydrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To minimize the gear you\u2019re carrying, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/recommends\/silicone-collapsible-bowls\/\">a collapsible silicone bowl with a carabiner<\/a> that you can attach to your own water bottle or to a treat pouch. Seating area throughout<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re near the entrance, midway, or deep into the dog park, there are plenty of seats located throughout the park. You\u2019ll find the seats range from picnic tables, benches, to concrete slabs depending on where you are in the park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-1-5-5-km-of-established-trails-across-13-5-acres-of-space\"><strong>7.<\/strong> <strong>1.5 &#8211; 5 KM of established trails across ~13.5 acres of space<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the park has been dedicated to off-leash play. If you exclude the small dog area AND the toboggan hill, you STILL have <strong>13.5 acres of space for off-leash play<\/strong>. That\u2019s a ton of space left over to explore the space!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the perimeter itself is a short 1.5 KM walk, there are plenty of trails within the space to allow for varied and interesting loops within the park. You read that feature correctly!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.com\/news\/council\/sustainable-dog-waste-containers-to-be-installed-in-mississauga-parks\/article_72dad8f4-8b64-51bd-a7c2-ad13259bfe43.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dog waste pilot project, turned city initiative<\/a>, Jack Darling dog park and several other Mississauga dog parks have these really awesome neon green dog waste receptacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sutera-inground.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sutera In-Ground<\/a>, these receptacles are <strong>odour-free<\/strong> (thanks to its underground storage design) and green (in energy!) too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the containers are full, the dog waste is transferred to a facility where it is anaerobically digested, <strong>converted into methane, and then finally, into<\/strong> <strong>electricity<\/strong>. Poop Bag Dispensers Available<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Poop bag dispensers are located near the entrances on the bulletin boards. Unfortunately, I have not seen it filled during my two visits here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d still recommend that you <strong>bring your own poop bags just in case<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for great value, I really recommend getting your <a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/recommends\/costco-poops-720ct-1-dispenser\/\">poop bags from Costco<\/a> if you can (they can be ordered online even if you don\u2019t have a Costco membership card). The closest bus stop is at <strong>Lakeshore Rd W of Lorne Park Rd<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>For Toronto visitors, it\u2019s \u2018an okay\u2019 commute if you\u2019re willing to make the trek.<strong> From Union<\/strong>, take the <strong>Lakeshore West Go<\/strong> train t<strong>o Port Credit Go.<\/strong> From here,<strong> transfer to the 23 Westbound bus and get off at Lakeshore Rd W of Lorne Park Rd<\/strong> to make your way to Jack Darling. Lo and behold we *almost* couldn\u2019t find a parking spot in the main parking lot <strong>because it was so busy<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Limone being on the smaller side (she\u2019s exactly 25 pounds!) we were able to visit both the small off-leash dog area as well as the two main off-leash areas as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how we ended up spending our 2.5-hour visit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>30 min in the small off-leash area <strong>playing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 minutes on the toboggan hill <strong>dog watching at the top of the hill<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.5 hours looping around the main off-leash trail area &#8211; we looped over 3 times to explore as much of the interconnected trails offered in the park as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our favourite part of the Jack Darling Dog Park was how <strong>each loop in the main off-leash area resulted in new terrain to explore<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exploring just the perimeter grants you access to <strong>shaded forest trails<\/strong>, and at the southernmost end, a <strong>large sandy area for diggers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the central area, you get to explore the<strong> naturalized rooftops of the water treatment facility<\/strong> &#8211; which is such a treat since you get a unique mix of nature and concrete integrated together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Jack Darling offers a less rugged experience compared to the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>4 KM off-leash <a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/etobicoke-valley-dog-park-review-an-off-leash-trail-oasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Etobicoke Creek<\/a> or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>massive off-leash area in Oshawas\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/reviewing-an-oshawa-dog-park-harmony-valley-off-leash-dog-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harmony Valley<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Darling Dog Park is an<strong> equally massive dog park<\/strong> that offers a more diverse set of unique terrain making this a<strong> highly stimulating and enjoyable dog park for dogs of all ages to explore<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Limone the corgi posing in the forest trails at Jack Darling Dog Park\" class=\"wp-image-5105\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSF1189-1400x934.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"subsequent-visits\">Subsequent Visits to Jack Darling Dog Park (Weekday Experience)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A weekday experience at Jack Darling dog park is much like visiting other dog parks on the weekday &#8211; there are fewer people and larger groups of dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Darling Dog Park is a no-brainer for local dog walkers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we arrived at 10:30 AM on a weekday morning, the parking lot was about a quarter empty but off-leash areas were quite busy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect anywhere between <strong>2-3 groups of dog walkers with 5+ dogs per group<\/strong> near the gates by the main parking lot on weekdays. We made about 3-4 loops during our 1.5-hour weekday visit, looping by the entrance each time and we consistently saw 5-10 dogs (each loop resulted in a different set) near the main entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you explore further along inside the park though, Jack Darling\u2019s off-leash dog park transforms into a tranquil space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At times, Limone and I felt like we were practically exploring the space on our own. to include seasonal details &#8211; even if I\u2019ve only visited the dog park location a few times. I refer to Google Reviews for some additional seasonal information if I\u2019ve only visited a few times to fill out the other seasonal information as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some key points to note depending on which season you are visiting this dog park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spring &#8211;<\/strong> If you\u2019re visiting the main off-leash area, bring a towel with you to wipe off the mud. Having said that, it\u2019s possible to keep a clean dog during your visit by avoiding the sand bar to the south as well the middle trail that leads up to the water treatment rooftop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summer<\/strong> &#8211; Arrive early if you\u2019re coming by car. Weekends are always full and obtaining a parking spot can be difficult unless you beat the summer crowd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fall<\/strong> &#8211; Much like spring, you may want to bring a towel &#8211; otherwise, the space is fantastic for a nice day outside&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winter<\/strong> &#8211; The toboggan hill can be closed during the winter for children to go down.
