With a surprising amount of amenities including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A dedicated fenced small dog park<\/li><li>A dedicated water supply for humans and dogs<\/li><li>Lounge chairs for dog owners<\/li><li>Intentionally crated dog park terrain<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t let the smaller size deter you from adding this dog park to your next dog park adventure list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/DSF0847-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Downsview Dog Park | Dogsview Park - Corgi framed between owner's legs. Regardless of how you arrive or where you park, <strong>you\u2019ll need to walk at least several minutes on the circuit path<\/strong> (the main perimeter trail of the park) <strong>to make your way towards the dog park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this might seem like a con at first, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that because of this, Dogsview Park is located:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A peaceful distance from high traffic areas of Downsview Park<\/li><li>Offers a great view of the Lake<\/li><li>In the winter becomes a great view for watching tobogganers slide down the \u2018Mini Mound\u2019 nearby<\/li><li>Dogs can play in a less distracting environment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parking-at-downsview-dog-park\">Parking at Downsview Dog Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking is <strong>free<\/strong> at Downsview Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Only visiting the dog park<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d recommend parking to the south of Downsview Park. Street parking is free on<strong> Downsview Park Blvd<\/strong> (near the townhomes) and gives you the <strong>closest access to the dog park<\/strong>. From the street parking, simply walk around the \u2018Mini Mound\u2019 to reach the off-leash area.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planning to explore the rest of Downsview Park?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d recommend parking at the <strong>dedicated parking lot located at 70 Canuck Ave, Toronto, ON<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re visiting on a normal day, the side streets and dedicated Downsview Park parking lot should have more than enough parking space for your visit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Visiting Downsview Park during a special event? After entering the main area, there is an additional gate to access to small dog off-leash area two steps away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The small dog off-leash area takes up about a third of the off-leash play area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dedicated area features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Flat woodchip off-leash area<\/li><li>Short paved walkways<\/li><li>Shade (eventually) &#8211; <em>trees are planted inside the dog park. All the trees are still young though will need several years before they mature enough to provide shade &#8211; in the next upcoming years, however, there won\u2019t be any shade at the dog park<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-dedicated-water-source\"><strong>2<\/strong>. <strong>Dedicated water source<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a dedicated water fountain that serves both humans and dogs. Spouts are human height and dog-bowl height. The foundation is located inside Dogsview park, inside the main off-leash area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Like most other fountains, the dog fountain is not in operation during the winter months (November to April). Some dog owners at Dogsview Park mentioned that the dog fountain was not working last May either. To minimize the gear you\u2019re carrying, I recommend a <a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/recommends\/silicone-collapsible-bowls\/\">collapsible silicone bowl with a carabiner<\/a> that you can attach to your water bottle or your treat pouch. That way you can keep your hands in your pockets during these cooler months!&nbsp;<\/li><li>Visitors using the small dog off-leash area will need to cross into the main off-leash area to access the fountain. There is no dedicated water access in the small dog area or outside the off-leash area.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-multi-terrain\"><strong>3<\/strong>. <strong>Multi-terrain&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever designed this dog park <strong>prioritized fun stimuli for dogs<\/strong>. The off-leash area includes multiple terrains for varied textures and physical abilities including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Multiple grassy mounds for uphill and downhill racing fun (also serves as great hide and seek when playing with other dogs!)<\/li><li>Woodchips in the heavy chase &amp; play area<\/li><li>Flat grassy areas further back for the relaxed off-leash dog sniffers<\/li><li>Concrete hard surface for humans and non-muddy treks<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-double-gated-entryway-with-extra-traffic-corral\"><strong>4. Double-gated entryway with extra traffic corral <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogsview park\u2019s entryway is not only double-gated but also features a corral type of fencing (where you need to walk around fences) to help regulate the inflow and outflow of dogs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-cheerful-red-muskoka-chairs\"><strong>5. Cheerful Red Muskoka Chairs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We aren\u2019t even close to cottage country and yet somehow two cheerful red Muskoka chairs found it\u2019s way into Downsview\u2019s dog park! As a fellow dog owner, I can\u2019t help but rejoice with this decision!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downsview Park designed this dog park to be <strong>a serene and comfortable lounge space for humans<\/strong> too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-3-7km-accessible-on-leash-trails-across-291-acres-of-multi-use-land\"><strong>6. 3.7KM accessible on-leash trails across 291 acres of multi-use land<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a former Canadian Forces Toronto Base, Downsview Park is a <em>massive parcel of land <\/em>at 291 acres.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since this space opened to the public in 1999, this former military base has now transformed into an <strong>integrated park with a growing list of family-friendly features<\/strong> including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>An apple orchard pavilion<\/li><li>3.7 KM of paved walking trails<\/li><li>162,000sq ft. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpmarket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indoor Merchant Market and Farmer\u2019s Market<\/a> (weekends 10:00 Am &#8211; 5:00 PM)<\/li><li>485,000 sq ft. multi-purpose sports complex &#8211; aka \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hangarsportevents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hangar<\/a>\u201d<\/li><li>45 Acres of Forest with woodchip trails<\/li><li>9-acre Storm Water Lake<\/li><li>Prairie Land<\/li><li>Urban Farms<\/li><li>Outdoor urban art<\/li><li>Children\u2019s play zone<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3.7 KM trail also known as the <strong>Circuit Path<\/strong> traverse the outer perimeter of the open Downsview Park space. This path along with its growing network of interconnected pathways and forest trails means Downsview Park makes for an excellent on-leash stroll filled with stimulating and enriching sights and sounds for you and your dog to enjoy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-natural-division-of-off-leash-space-for-play-and-sniffs\"><strong>7. Natural division of off-leash space for play and sniffs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The dog park itself has an almost teardrop-like shape. Near the entrance or the \u2018base\u2019 of the teardrop, the area is wide and offers multiple mini mounds for a more challenging chase and play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you walk further into the dog park, the tapered end becomes flatter and the woodchips make way to grassy landscapes. This grassy area has few dogs and is a great place for more shy dogs to spend some time quality off-leash time sniffing around and working on desensitization activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-garbage-and-recycling-bins-are-located-inside-the-off-leash-areas\">8. <strong>Garbage and Recycling bins are located inside the off-leash areas.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-bike-racks-at-the-off-leash-entrance\">9. <strong>Bike racks at the off-leash entrance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dog-owning bikers, this is your sign to visit Downsview Park. Washrooms are located about a 10 minutes\u2019 walk away at the orchard pavilion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flushable washrooms are only available to the public from May to November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From November to April, the washrooms will be locked. Visitors will only have access to portables at the orchard pavilion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>No Additional Lighting<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Dogsview Park does not have floodlights or solar lights. Early morning or late evening play in the off-leash area likely won\u2019t be possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main circuit path has<strong> intermittent lighting<\/strong> on the pathways. Parts of the path are not well lit either so I would not recommend Downsview Park as a great park to visit in the dark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Low fences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most frequent complaint mentioned in negative reviews. Downsview Dog Park\u2019s fences are relatively low.&nbsp; Any larger dog or any dog with significant hops can vault these fences with relative ease. Still, despite the weather conditions, there were more than a handful of people that visited Downsview Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most were dog owners strolling through the park around the circuit path.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We loved that Circuit Path\u2019s walkways were <strong>wide and well salted<\/strong>. The walkways were so wide there <strong>was ample space for dogs to pass by each other<\/strong> with a family of four walking in opposite directions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We <strong>ended up spending almost 3 hours at Downsview park<\/strong> on our first stay. Here\u2019s how we ended up spending our time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>45 min<\/strong> in <strong>Dogsview Park<\/strong> (most of the time was solo exploration since there were so few visitors)<\/li><li><strong>1.5 hours<\/strong> exploring the<strong> forest grove trails<\/strong> with Limone (we saw an owl and plenty of other winter birds here too!)<\/li><li><strong>30 minutes<\/strong> atop <strong>\u2018The Mound\u2019<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>15 minutes<\/strong> exploring parts of the <strong>Circuit Path<\/strong> with Limone<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"initial-impression-of-dogsview-park\">Initial Impression of Dogsview Park<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever designed Downsview\u2019s dog park made sure to think of design and experience. Unlike most dog parks that are just fenced-in open, flat spaces, this <strong>Dogsview Park was intentionally created with mounds of varying sizes and shapes<\/strong>. <strong>Paved pathways and designated rest spaces for owners were also thoughtfully incorporated into this park<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We loved that Downsview Dog Park was designed to be a place for dog owners to enjoy, relax, and linger. Considering there were no dogs in the space we lingered here longer than expected!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"forest-grove-trails\">Forest Grove Trails<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to spend some time walking and exploring the rest of Downsview Park, we highly recommend the Forest Trails north of the dog park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many urban dogs, an additional on-leash trail walk through a woodchipped forested network of trails is highly stimulating and rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This urban forest also has an active birding community. On our second visit, we saw an owl and several species of birds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-mound\">The Mound<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep. That\u2019s the official name for the big hill near the forest trails according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.downsviewpark.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/General%20Map%202019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downsview Park Map<\/a>. If you can make it up without slipping, the Mound is a great place to enjoy a scenic view of the park and its neighbouring area. I refer to Google Reviews for some additional seasonal information if I\u2019ve only visited a few times to fill out the other seasonal information as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you have any tips or additional comments, feel free to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/contact\/\"><em>send me an email<\/em><\/a><em>, message me on <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/syderoad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Twitter<\/em><\/a><em>, or slide me a DM on <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/syde_road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Instagram<\/em><\/a><em>!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some key points to note depending on which season you are visiting this dog park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spring &#8211;<\/strong> You may want to <strong>avoid <\/strong>visiting Downsview Dog Park\u2019s main off-leash area during Spring. <strong>Muddy pools form at the bottom of the mounds<\/strong> at the dog park and the mounds themselves become quite slippery thanks to the mud.<strong> Guaranteed a wet and muddy dog if you do decide to visit during the spring<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summer<\/strong> &#8211; N\/A overall a great time for dogs and dog-owners alike. Once the trees have matured in the dog park, this will be a great shaded area as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fall<\/strong> &#8211; You may want to<strong> bring a towel<\/strong> &#8211; much like spring the park can become a bit muddy &#8211; especially around the mound areas, but there will be<strong> less water pooling than spring<\/strong> \/ early winter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winter<\/strong> &#8211; From personal experience, late winter and warmer winter days will result in<strong> ice around the paved walkways in the dog par<\/strong>k. Unlike the circuit path, the <strong>walkways inside the dog park are not salted so it can get quite slippery<\/strong>. Please be careful when using the dog park\u2019s paved areas! The woodchipped areas however are great!
