Well, it depends! Well, imagine accidentally scalding yourself in a hot shower. Ouch! Now imagine applying that same temperature or hotter to your dog\u2019s feet when you take them out for a walk. Double ouch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just so we all understand exactly how painful that can be for dog paw pads, here are some temperature facts for more context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-color\" style=\"color:#219ebc\"><blockquote><p><strong>Temperature Fact #1: <\/strong>&nbsp;The human skin begins to feel pain at a temperature of <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#fd9e02\" class=\"has-inline-color\">43.9\u00b0 C \/ 111\u00b0 F<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p><cite>Walters, T. This means that <em>this rule is enforceable by the law<\/em>, to protect us from severely burning ourselves in the shower.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, you might be thinking to yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMaria\u2026 fact #2 is SO RANDOM. Why are you talking about showers when I\u2019m just here to learn more about when it\u2019s too hot to walk my dog?\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\u2026 I\u2019ll have to agree with you! The temperature fact is <em>out there<\/em> &#8211; but just take a look at how hot asphalt can get in the sun:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Air Temperature<\/th><th>Asphalt Surface Temperature <br><strong>(Under Direct Sun)<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>25\u00b0 C \/ 77\u00b0 F<\/td><td>52\u00b0 C \/ 125\u00b0 F<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>30\u00b0 C \/ 86\u00b0 F<\/td><td>57\u00b0 C \/ 135\u00b0 F<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>31\u00b0 C \/ 87\u00b0 F<\/td><td>62\u00b0 C\/ 143\u00b0 F<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn\u2019t it CRAZY that at just 25\u00b0 C, walking on asphalt can feel hotter than taking the absolute hottest shower in Ontario?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have literal regulations to protect people from burns, yet asphalt can EASILY scorch past that temperature on a kind-of-warm day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-color\" style=\"color:#219ebc\"><blockquote><p><strong>Temperature Fact #3:<\/strong> At <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#fd9e02\" class=\"has-inline-color\">52\u00b0 C \/ 125\u00b0 F, it takes just 2 minutes for us to get seriously burned<\/mark>.<\/p><cite>PICHOFF, B. (1994). <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7997963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CHILDREN AT RISK FOR ACCIDENTAL BURNS FROM HOT TAP WATER<\/a>.&nbsp;<em>TEXAS MEDICINE<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>90<\/em>(11), 54\u201358.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s the key takeaway here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of how hot asphalt, concrete, and other paved surfaces can get in the summer, your<strong> dog\u2019s paw pads can easily burn even if it\u2019s only 25\u00b0 C \/ 77\u00b0 F outside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about walking your dog on other surfaces like grass and soil?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So now that we know just how hot asphalt can feel on our dog\u2019s feet, you might be wondering &#8211; what about other surfaces? What if I walk my dog on just grass? Will their feet still burn?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/26508025_Determination_of_temperature_differences_between_asphalt_concrete_soil_and_grass_surfaces_of_the_City_of_Erzurum_Turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study done in Turkey<\/a>, that can help us answer this question! They compared the surface temperature of asphalt concrete, soil, and grass on sunny days. At 30\u00b0 C+, you may need to watch out for potential paw pad burns.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I only walk in the shade?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, so we ALL KNOW that staying in the shade feels so much cooler on a hot sunny day. Even though the temperature doesn\u2019t change, it feels cooler because we\u2019re not absorbing heat directly from the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But did you know that shade has a HUGE impact on reducing how hot the surfaces feel on our dog\u2019s feet?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we take some of the findings from this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4907\/11\/11\/1141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study done in Australia<\/a>, we can see that shade can provide<strong> up to 10\u00b0 C to 25\u00b0 C reduction in surface temperature<\/strong> when compared to the same surface in the blazing sun.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-color\" style=\"color:#219ebc\"><blockquote><p> Shade can provide<strong> up to 10\u00b0 C to 25\u00b0 C reduction Walk in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to walk either before 8:00 AM in the morning or after 8:00 PM in the evening. Not only will it be cooler, but the pavement and sidewalks will be too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Choose shaded trails or trails with water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shade can help dogs absorb less heat on their fur while also providing a cooler surface for their paws. Similarly, choosing trails with a water source and allowing your dogs to enter is a great way to keep the heat at bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Bring water &#8211; no matter how short your walk is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re going for a ten-minute walk, I\u2019d recommend bringing along some water for your dog to keep them hydrated and cool. On extra hot days, the extra water can also be used on their bodies to help release some of the body heat too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Take shorter walks more often<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like how you can<a href=\"https:\/\/syderoad.com\/how-long-can-i-walk-my-dog-in-the-cold-weather\/\"> shorten your walks in the winter<\/a> when it gets too cold, you can shorten the duration of your walks in the summer. Opt for a higher interval (i.e. more frequent walks) and shorter duration to keep your dog from overheating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Have your dog wear cooling clothing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you heard of cooling clothing for dogs? You can either soak these types of clothing in water and let evaporation do its work to cool dogs down, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/chillybuddy.com\/summer-cooling-jacket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opt for reflective material<\/a> to keep your dog from absorbing heat (kind of like a car shade!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On hot and dry days, soaking evaporative cooling clothing in water is a great way to keep your dog cool.
