General Dog Guidelines When Visiting a Dog-Friendly Maple Syrup Farm in Ontario
If you plan on visiting any of these properties, please remember to follow these general guidelines to ensure that many more furry four-legged friends can appreciate these farms as well:
- Contact the farm ahead of time and notify them that you will be bringing a dog with you – many of these spaces are privately owned and their pet policies are subject to change at any time
- Keep your dog on a leash during your visit unless otherwise stated by the property owners
- Bring your dog poop bags, pick up after your pets, and pack the poop out with you or dispose of it in a disposal bin. Dog poop is NOT a fertilizer and contains many harmful bacteria and parasites that are not safe for the maple trees and the general public
- Be aware of the dog restrictions as many maple syrup farm tours will take you near food or indoor processing facilities. Know that if you book a tour, you will either need to skip these parts of the tour, or have another friend or family stay outside with your dog during that part of the tour

Frequently Asked Questions About Maple Syrup Farms in Ontario and Dogs
1. When is Maple Syrup Season in Ontario?
Maple syrup season in Ontario is between February and April of each year. Most producers start tapping maple trees when the temperatures dip below zero at night and rise above zero in the day.
2. Is Maple Syrup Safe for Dogs to Eat?
Yes, maple syrup is dog-friendly – meaning that your dog can eat maple syrup in small quantities without any adverse effects. Maple syrup is not toxic or dangerous to dogs. However, much like other treats, this should only be fed in small quantities as maple syrup is not a significant source of nutritional benefits for dogs.
3. Can Dogs have Sugar-Free Maple Syrup?
If you’re visiting a maple syrup farm, chances are you won’t be looking for sugar-free maple syrup! But I’ve included this question just in case as a PSA to all dog owners that not all syrups are safe for dogs to consume.
Be careful before providing your dog with any form of syrups with artificial sweeteners (including sugar-free maple syrup). Some sugar-free syrup substitutes contain xylitol which is extremely toxic to dogs. When dogs ingest xylitol, it can cause severe liver failure and other significant health issues. This article written by Dr. Justine Lee (board certified emergency critical care veterinary specialist and toxicologist in Minneapolis) for Pet Health Network, is a great article to read if you’re curious about the side effects of xylitol poisoning.
Note: Other Sugar-free ingredients like sorbitol, maltitol, erythritol are not poisonous or toxic to dogs.
